it was ok i suppose. i liked the visuals but absolutely hated the pacing. wow I thought it was an hour longer than the Herzog version last night, I was wrong and its only an extra 20mins, how does it feel SO LONG when it doesn’t have those slow long shots that Herzog had? Loved how dreamy that 70s version is, this is obviously a different tone that felt okay though the constant “intense/jumpscare” moments for the first 30 mins were a bit tiring, one of the stronger points of Herzog’s ethereal version is the weird and beautiful soundtrack that immediately jumped out to me, Eggers version does not have anything of note for it’s music.
I really love Isabelle Adjani and was worried I’d keep comparing Lily Rose Depp’s performance to her but she fit well within the tone of this movie and was the best part here I’d say.
I will give props for an interesting Orlok portrayal, though I don’t like that he wasn’t “creepy”, he was just a monster imo, no sucking blood no being hunched over obsessing over the locket.
the Orlok / Lily Rose Depp relationship is this comforting depression coming to take away the happiness of love?
